About Us
History of Mi Casa Es Su Casa
By Aleyda Wales, President and Founder
In January of 2007 our first independent living home, housing people with mental illnesses and disabilities, was opened in San Diego, CA. The home was a house, no different than every other house on the block. No different than the one where you live.
The first month was definitely a make or break time for me and my family. As we began to interact and work with these people whom society considered outcasts, we realized they had needs that were so great and so obvious. It was not hard to see why nobody wanted to deal with them. All the classes I had taken and all the learning that I had received could not have prepared me for what came next. Their manic and depressive behaviors took a lot of getting used to.
After 6 months my husband, Ed, and I realized their greatest need and developed a system to help them gain stability of living within the world around them. We have now developed this business into a thriving environment that produces happy and healthy conditions for these people to enjoy their lives. It embraces and builds community involvement and cooperation.
Now, 7 years later, we are a bona fide 501(c)3 Non-profit corporation. We continue to provide a supportive, safe and stable environment where people with mental illnesses can live, grow and integrate themselves back in to the community. Our vision, as we look towards the future, is about continuing to develop our relationships with community leaders, healthcare providers, social workers, law enforcement, businesses and concerned citizens to educate and raise public awareness for this segment of society that has been in such great need of support for far too long of a time.
