What is Independent Living?
An Independent Living Home, or Facility, provides housing for adults with disabling health conditions and/or mental illness. Many people who are living with a mental illness are on a limited budget and find locating affordable housing to be a difficult task. An unstable living environment is one of the major barriers in recovery from mental illness.
Independent Livings fall under the category of 'shared housing'. An Independent Living Home plays a major role in the continuum of housing options for people who suffer from mental illness by providing a safe, stable environment where clients have more support than they would have if living on their own, but less care than they would receive in a hospital, board and care or nursing facility.
In addition to safe and affordable housing, most Independent Livings provide other amenities such as prepared meals and laundry. Independent Livings may include any or all of the amenities below:
